Current Position:

Kathy Jones is a highly qualified K-5 music specialist, holding a K-12 vocal and instrumental endorsement as well as a full endorsement from OAKE (Organization of American Kodály Educators). She has also completed World Music Drumming level I and II and Teaching Guitar Workshop level I.

She serves two buildings in Augusta USD 402, Robinson Elementary, and Lincoln Elementary, where she has joyfully educated children since 1997. She currently teaches music education to all students, grades K-5 at both buildings. She utilizes the Kodaly (Ko-dye) approach to music education, using the voice as the primary instrument as well as folk songs, games, dances, and pitch/rhythmic activities. World music drumming is also frequently used at Robinson Elementary. She also has a small number of beginning guitar students.

Kathy completed a B.A. at Ottawa University in Music and Education, a MAed at Baker University, and has completed an additional 24 hours of Graduate study between Wichita State and the VanderCook School of Music.

A personal note from Mrs. Jones.

I am grateful every single day for the opportunity to foster joyful and positive relationships. My goal is to model and teach children musical literacy, while making the most of both ability and skill. I want my students to understand the impact of music leading the heart.  I have the opportunity to impact others and foster change, both intellectually and emotionally. The benefit for me is seeing my students succeed, by improving musical literacy, pedagogical skill, and hearing them say later in life, ‘I wouldn’t be doing this if it weren’t for you.’

Previous Position:

Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Jones worked at the Wesley Family Practice Residency program.

Family Information:

Mrs. Jones is blessed to have an incredibly supportive husband, who assists with school performances, loves music, serves others, and desires only the best for her and her students. He sometimes comes to class in his “invisible” state, to assist with movement activities, and to model what good choices look like. It’s always a surprise for younger students when they meet Mr. Jones for the first time and realize he IS “real.”

While Mrs. Jones regularly refers to her students, both past and present as her “kids,” she reaps the reward of two ambitious adult step-children. Three energetic and adventurous granddaughters, who call her “NuNu.”  At home, there are two four-legged fur babies. Mabel is a boxer who thinks she is a person, and Moses is half boxer and half lab. They love car rides and chasing tennis balls.

Personal Information:

When Mrs. Jones isn’t teaching, she LOVES to be outdoors!  Springtime will find her working in the flower beds at home. She has a blast attending local music events, and is a regular at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival every year. She also enjoys riding her motorcycle, and she and Mr. Jones are learning how to fly a Powered Parachute!

Travel is also a favorite thing to do, and usually has something to do with music, outdoor activities, and spending time with family and friends. And of course, she never stops learning!
